Sleepout raises $44,716 for local homelessness support

On Friday 31 July, Whyalla Recreation Centre hosted the 2026 Whyalla Sleepout, a fundraiser held to raise money and awareness for people experiencing homelessness in the region.

The event had been planned for Ada Ryan Gardens, but a Code Blue weather warning prompted the Whyalla Homelessness Awareness Committee to move it to the stadium at Whyalla Recreation Centre. The change gave participants shelter, as recommended under the warning, while still allowing people to sleep outside or in their cars if they chose to.

Around 45 people took part on the night, and the community around them pushed the result past expectations: the 2026 Whyalla Sleepout raised $44,716. Every dollar stays local, going toward cost of living support and early intervention opportunities for young people in Whyalla.

Santos (Gold Sponsor), Tilt Renewables (Silver Sponsor) and the Harp & Shamrock Club (Bronze Sponsor) contributed more than $9,000 of that total between them. Whyalla Recreation Centre was one of a number of local businesses and organisations that also backed the event, alongside Dominos, Alligator Energy, Shuestring Brew, Neil Higgins, Snap Fitness Whyalla and Cochranes.

The most powerful part of the night came from two people who know exactly what that funding does. Jeanita shared her story of the role local support services played during some of the hardest periods of her life. Another young person spoke about attending the 2025 Operation Flinders camp, a placement made possible by money raised at the 2024 Whyalla Sleepout. Their story showed fundraising already at work, and Jeanita's showed why this year's will matter just as much.

The result belongs to everyone who donated, slept out, volunteered or fundraised this year, and it lands at a fitting time. The day after the sleepout marked the start of Homelessness Week, with further events planned across Whyalla to keep the conversation going.

The Whyalla Sleepout is run by the Whyalla Homelessness Awareness Committee, made up of Mission Australia Whyalla and Port Augusta, headspace Whyalla, Centacare Catholic Country SA, Whyalla City Council and HOPE Whyalla.
