Ceri Hutton wins Matt Byrne Award for youth theatre leadership at The Parks Theatre
Ceri Hutton, head of The Parks Youth Theatre, has been recognised with The Theatre Association of South Australian (TASA) Matt Byrne Award for her work opening doors for young people in Adelaide's northwestern suburbs, both on stage and behind the scenes.
The Matt Byrne Award recognises an individual that creates exceptional opportunities for people to step into a successful first-time role in theatre. More than nine years ago, Ceri joined The Parks Youth Theatre to provide a more affordable musical theatre option for children in Adelaide’s northwestern suburbs. What began as an accessible entry point into theatre has grown into a valued community space, where young people can build confidence, develop skills and form meaningful connections with others.

Ceri’s leadership has made such a lasting difference. Her nomination highlighted her commitment to removing barriers to participation, creating a safe space for children, and building a team of skilled tutors to nurture young artists. As Ceri says, participants can “leave their outside worries at the door and learn from kind and skilled people.”

Through The Parks Youth Theatre, Ceri's work reflects YMCA SA's role in creating opportunities for young people across South Australia. By helping young people feel seen, supported and inspired to step forward, the program demonstrates what community-centred youth work looks like in practice.
