YMCA hosts Autism Friendly swim event

YMCA South Australia in partnership with Autism South Australian will host an inclusive Autism Friendly Swimming event at six major recreation centres across South Australia on Thursday, 12 July.

The free event will run from 1pm to 3pm at The Parks Recreation and Sports Centre, the Aquadome, Fleurieu Aquatic Centre, The Valleys Lifestyle Centre, Port Lincoln Leisure Centre and Whyalla Recreation Centre.

YMCA South Australia Community Strengthening Manager Marion Modra said that the event was not just a recreation opportunity for participants, but a great way to educate the general community about the importance of inclusion.

“The YMCA promotes active participation that is inclusive for all people in health and fitness across South Australia. Our passionate staff team have a ‘can do’ attitude that conquers any barrier to participation,” Ms Modra said.

“The Autism Friendly Swim event is a judgement free zone. It’s open to everyone and includes all members of the family. Families can go out without the fear of people staring or judging them by the behaviour of their kids, which happens far too often.”

Acceptance and accessibility for people on the spectrum as valued and active community members is a key aim.

Ms Modra added that training and information about how autism can affect people will be provided to staff at all participating centres, as part of the education process for people not exposed to or familiar with the condition.

As one of the first organisations to sign up to Autism SA’s Autism Friendly Charter, YMCA South Australia has implemented a range of initiatives to make sure their managed centres are fun, safe and inclusive hubs for everyone to visit.
