YMCA Gymnast Matilda Gourlay reaches national heights
YMCA South Australia gymnast Matilda Gourlay marked her national debut at the 2025 Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast in July, showcasing the determination that earned her a coveted spot on the South Australian State Team.
The 18-year-old Level 8 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competitor balanced more than ten hours gymnastics training per week while also working as a gymnastics coach in the junior development program at YMCA O’Sullivan Beach, and studying a degree of Sports Science at Flinders University.
Matilda’s qualifying scores secured her a spot at the 2025 South Australian Championships, where she achieved personal-best results across all apparatus to qualify for the team.
With only weeks between the state competitions and the nationals, Matilda fine-tuned her skills under the watchful eye of long-time YMCA O’Sullivan Beach Coach Sandy Griffin-Knight, focusing on skill presentation and performance. Adding additional strength and flexibility sessions in preparation for the national event.
“Every routine—and every landing—has been built step by step,” said coach Griffin-Knight. “Matilda’s work ethic in the gym and in the classroom is what really sets her apart. I am proud of her tenacity and attention to detail.”
On the Gold Coast, Matilda joined seven fellow South Australian Level 8 gymnasts contesting the all-round team and individual placings competing on vault bars, beam and floor. Matilda’s performance on all apparatus were an integral part of the team’s success. Matilda held her own against higher-difficulty routines, earning commendable execution scores that mirrored her state-level performances.
“I felt a mix of nerves and excitement the moment I stepped onto the competition floor,” Matilda reflected. “It was incredible to test myself against the best in the country. I learned so much about where my routines need to go next.”
Matila received sponsorship via the YMCA Impact Fund’s to assist with the costs of travel, accommodation, and additional coaching sessions, allowing Matilda to focus fully on competition preparedness. The YMCA Impact Fund provides small grants to support innovative projects and community groups. “We’re proud to back young athletes like Matilda who demonstrate the drive and dedication to excel on the national stage,” said Haydn Bellamy – Recreation Development Manager.
As she returns home, Matilda Gourlay carries more than just scores—she brings the confidence that comes from competing with Australia’s best and a clear roadmap for her next leap forward.
