COVID-19: Recreation and Community Centre Closures. Details and FAQ's.

At last, it’s time for you, our loyal members, to get excited.

We are thrilled to announce that we are aiming to re-open the Holdfast Bay Community Centre – your Centre – on Tuesday, 9th of June.

The re-opening is part of Step 2 of the South Australian Roadmap for easing CV-19 restrictions. We know the Government has moved Step 2 forward to 5 June, however to ensure the best possible customer experience with all hands on deck we’ve decided to open after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Staff have already returned and are busy preparing for the return of programs upon reopening. An industrial clean and the implementation of safety measures for patrons and staff have been undertaken.

In the meantime:

  • Staff are continuing to contact clients via phone on a regular basis, keeping them up to date with services and offering assistance. Please let us know if you have any questions or need assistance accessing a service - call the Centre on 8298 7422 between 9am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday.
  • Tim Looker has remained dedicated to keeping the Centre grounds in immaculate condition and has been busy working on our Community Garden space (see photo).
  • Jasmin, our Exercise Physiologist, continues to provide Telehealth and in-home visits, which have been well received along with our online exercise videos.

LEAP Update

The Leap Online program is still making great connections, with people from Whyalla, Smithfield and Holdfast Bay planning to meet face to face now they have established a relationship. This will be followed up with camping opportunities post CV-19.

Leap Taker participants are returning in ones and twos for short visits which has been received well. While there have been some issues given so much remains in lockdown, catching up with friends has been a huge positive.

The countdown is on and we’ll be in touch with the plans we’re putting in place for your safety. Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate the resumption of business.

Things are going to be a little different – but it’s still going to be your Y.

Hello from your friends at HBCC 06.05.20

Greetings to our valued Members,

I trust this update finds you and your loved ones safe and well.

We are now seeing restrictions ease in some parts of the country and South Australian authorities continue to assess how and when we can re-engage with you. In the meantime we are continuing to find alternate ways to deliver services to our community members.

Exciting news this week as our Exercise Physiologist, Jasmin, returns to offer valuable exercise options to our clients. She will be available to offer 1 on 1 in-home consultations, Telehealth consultations and At Home exercise programs. Please call Jasmin on 0419 337 587 or via email at alliedhealth.hbcc@ymca.org.au

Craft Kits are being created and delivered to our craft group each week by Liz. If you would like to be involved in the craft group, please let us know by calling the Centre number on 8298 7422 or emailing us at hbcc@ymca.org.au

COTA continues to provide our clients with alternate exercise options.

While the Centre has been closed, we have taken the opportunity to give the outdoor deck and the community garden some much needed attention, thanks to the drive and support of YMCA stalwart Tim Looker.

LEAP Update

Leap Online continues to be a huge success, bringing people from across the state together to meet, chat, share their news and prove social isolation does not mean socially isolated. New friendships have been created across regions and ensured people living with disability are not only engaged, but broadening their communities.

The development of new IT skills has changed how people interact and provided exciting opportunities as we come out of restrictions. Visits are already being planned among people who had not met before Leap Online started.

Youth Update

Youth Parliament will go ahead later in the year but engagement continues through online forums and the creation of workbooks for the training weekend. Participants are discovering new ways to build social connection and strengthen as a team as a result of adversity.

Finally, the Community Strengthening Team would like to wish all mums a Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday. Stay safe and please contact us if you need support.

Sincerely,

Marion Modra and the Community Strengthening Team

A message from our Centre Manager 10.04.20

To our valued Members,

Firstly, I hope that you and your loved ones are safe, healthy and managing your time at home in the best possible way.

The closure of the Holdfast Bay Community Centre has obviously had a big impact on social activity.

Since the closure we have been adapting our services to ensure we are still reaching the members of our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable. We are making daily phone calls to our Commonwealth Home Support Program clients and extending this service to our broader community centre users also. We aim to stay in touch.

Members keen to stay fit and active can now access our free Les Mills on Demand platform. Thanks to our friends at COTA you can also access eight online Strength for Life videos to help keep connected and fit during this enforced lay off.

While the Centre has been closed, we have taken the opportunity to give the outdoor deck and the community garden some much needed attention, thanks to the drive and support of YMCA stalwart Tim Looker.

There has also been some news in Youth Empowerment as follows:

  • Our team has been busy planning for the return of our Youth Parliament and Camping programs and are ready to hit the ground running
  • The Youth Hub at Marion Leisure and Fitness Centre is undergoing some work with the installation of a kitchenette and rearranging to make it a more functional zone.
  • Some exciting news for Hills dwellers with the Y and Ink Pot Arts in Mount Barker collaborating to deliver School Holiday activities via Zoom, in addition to the Affinity Arts program

While we are unable to provide you with personal service through our Centres at this time, we will stay in touch with ways to remain engaged until we reopen.

Please keep up to date with the latest via our website or Facebook.

Please contact us if you need any support during this time.

Sincerely,

Marion Modra and the Community Strengthening Team
